Election 2006: Senator George Allen

Racism is alive and well in the Republican party.

“This fellow here, over here with the yellow shirt, macaca, or whatever his name is. He’s with my opponent. He’s following us around everywhere. And it’s just great….Let’s give a welcome to macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia.” — Senator George Allen (R.-Va.) in a speech at a campaign rally in Breaks, Virginia on Friday, 11 August 2006. The “macaca” reference was directed to a volunteer for his opponent, James Webb, as detailed in this article in the Washington Post. Depending on context and spelling, the term is either a racial slur to people of Indian descent or a city located in South Africa.

The party of Lincoln is on a slow, downward spiral. That’s not particularly surprising given that as recently as six years ago, you had a prominent Republican presidential candidate declaring to one and all just how much he hates gooks.

It might be 2006 but remarks like these from people who should know better tell me that we really haven’t come that far from when George Wallace stood in the schoolhouse door.
